It acts progressively developing in those who practiced it the principles of Sthira and Sukha (strength and flexibility, consistency and convenience), achieving a healthy body as a whole. Through the practice of asanas (postures) and pranayama (breathing exercises) Hatha Yoga balances body, mind and emotions returning to its natural state of welfare.
This form of yoga is intensely physical and athletic. In America, “Ashtanga Yoga” most often refers to the system taught by Indian yoga master K. Pattabhi Jois and comprises a precise series of poses done in sequential order, linked together with the breath, using bandhas (locks), and concentrate on singular points using drishti (gaze) in asanas. In class, you’ll be led nonstop through one or more of the series and you’ll be encouraged to breathe as you move from pose to pose.
Breath and movement are synchronized within and between asanas.
“Vinyasa” comes from the Sanksrit “nyasa” which means “to place” and the prefix “vi”, ” in a special way” – as in the arrangement of notes in a song, the steps along a path to the top of a mountain, or the linking of one asana to the next.
In the Yoga world, the most common understanding of “vinyasa” is as a flowing sequence of specific asanas coordinated with the movements of the breath. In Vinyasa Flow breath is given primacy – asanas form around the breath- and we move into the flow of awareness, internalization, concentration or action within and between asanas, soothing and harmonizing the mind.
Power Yoga is about working hard sensitively. It’s about feeling good, not just looking good. The tone and shapeliness you attain from this work is a by-product. The focus here is balance and healing, focusing on a deep ujjai breath.
A gentle practice suitable for all levels. Seniors, injured and athletes alike will benefit from this practice tailored to restore physical and mental balance
